Squid (A deep sea creature that can grow to enormous size). Difficulty 75 — respectable for Year 1, solvable with a better rod and food once you have them. The failure mode is almost always fishing the wrong body of water or outside the bite window.

Mainland rules in one line: seasons Winter; weather any weather; times 18:00–2:00am; water the Beach ocean. Always confirm against the live catch matrix with your save’s season and weather set — data patches and island tiles can widen the map.

Where to stand

Prioritize the Beach ocean first — that is the cast most farmers mean when they search “where to catch squid.” Alternate tiles that also work: the Beach ocean.

If a location name includes Ginger Island, treat it as a late-game safety net after Willy’s boat, not a Year 1 plan. Forest Farm / Secret Woods tiles only help if your map or unlock actually exposes that water.

Pair the trip with another system so the walk pays twice: gift a riverside villager, check a nearby bundle item, or clear a forage loop on the way home.

How to schedule the day

In multiplayer, declare a named fish day so four players are not splitting bites across random ponds. One angler on the correct tile beats four anglers on the wrong river.

Bundles, cooking, and what not to ship

Before the shipping bin muscle memory fires, check whether Community Center fish tank rooms, quests, or cooks still need Squid. The bundles tool is faster than memory.
