Tools upgrade path: copper to iridium without wasting days

What order to upgrade pickaxe, axe, hoe, and can, how long Clint holds your tools, and how to plan watering around upgrade downtime.

Clint’s upgrades are multi-day commitments: you hand over the tool and bars, then live without it until the work is done. That downtime is why watering-can upgrades destroy unprepared farms and why pickaxe upgrades should land before tough ore nodes block progress.

Default priority for many farms: pickaxe → axe → hoe → can, with trash can upgrades whenever you have spare bars. Adjust if your bottleneck is hardwood logs or massive fields without sprinklers.

Copper pickaxe unlocks a new comfort tier in early Mines; steel and gold change boulder and node speed enough to feel like a different game. Iridium pickaxe plus bombs is the Skull Cavern standard fantasy.

Axe tiers gate hardwood stumps and large logs that block farm expansion and Secret Woods access. If a log is psychologically blocking your layout, axe jumps the queue even before pickaxe iridium.

Do not upgrade both pickaxe and watering can the same week unless sprinklers and alternate chores cover both absences. Parallel downtime doubles frustration.

Count copper across: tools, furnaces, quality sprinklers, and lightning rods. A week that tries all four fails all four halfway. Pick two.

Gold bars for tools compete with quality sprinklers and clocks—mid-game identity crisis is normal. Use the profit tool to see whether another season of hand tools costs more than the upgrade.

Trash can upgrades refund gold when you delete items—useful, still not ahead of steel pickaxe. Queue them as “surplus bar” crafts.

Blacksmith timing and days without a tool

Upgrades take a couple of nights—plan around rainy days, festivals, or Mines rest days. Talk to Clint with bars in inventory and gold ready; leaving the tool overnight starts the clock.

If today is a festival that already breaks chores, that is a perfect upgrade hand-in day. Use the date bar and dispatch tools so you do not forget a ready tool sitting at the shop.

  • Hand in before bed on a low-chore day
  • Pick up promptly when Clint finishes
  • Do not start two critical upgrades that overlap poorly in multiplayer shared schedules

Pickaxe and axe priorities

Pickaxe tiers open tougher rocks, skull nodes, and quarry speed. Axe tiers open hardwood stumps/logs and faster tree clears for buildings. Most players feel pickaxe pain first in the Mines, then axe pain at Secret Woods and farm cleanup.

Gold and iridium pickaxes dramatically change Skull Cavern rock clearing even before bombs do all the work.

Hoe and watering can without tears

Hoe upgrades raise tilled area—nice for planting day, not urgent if fields are stable. Watering can upgrades raise watered area but remove your can during the wait—sprinklers should exist first whenever possible.

Upgrade the can in Winter or on a day with full sprinkler coverage. Carry a backup plan: retain soil, smaller plots, or helper players in co-op.

  • Sprinklers before ambitious can upgrades
  • Hoe upgrades on planting-heavy weeks
  • Winter is perfect for can/pickaxe spikes

Bars, copper sinks, and opportunity cost

Copper and iron disappear into sprinklers, furnaces, and tools simultaneously. Count bars before promising yourself both quality sprinklers and a steel pickaxe the same week.

Trash can upgrades refund some sold-item gold—craft them when bars are surplus, not when pickaxe steel is still pending.

Multiplayer tool etiquette

Each farmer upgrades their own tools. Shared bar chests need rules so one player does not absorb all iridium. Hosts should announce upgrade days because chores redistribute when someone lacks an axe.

Calendar templates for upgrade weeks

Template A: hand in pickaxe on a rainy eve, mine with bombs the next day, pick up upgraded pickaxe, then hand in axe. Template B: Winter week of can/hoe upgrades while sprinklers handle nothing outdoors. Template C: festival day hand-ins when chores are already broken.

Always leave a note on the calendar chest: “PICKAXE AT CLINT.” Multiplayer mates will try to borrow a tool that does not exist.

Iridium bars are sacred—tools versus statue versus sprinklers versus weapons forge. Pick one iridium sink per week early on.

If a Special Order needs a watering can you just submitted, you have invented a new kind of pain. Check orders before upgrade hand-ins.

  • Rain/festival hand-in templates
  • Label missing tools
  • One iridium sink at a time
  • Check Special Orders first

Bars budget across competing sinks

Bars are a contested budget across tools, sprinklers, weapons, and buildings. Each week choose a primary sink. Parallel sinks create perpetual poverty of iron.

Watering can upgrades are sprinkler-gated psychologically—even if you “can manage,” automation first prevents crop death during Clint downtime.

Pick up finished tools the morning Clint is done. Forgotten tools are forgotten power.

Common tool upgrade mistakes

Timing mistakes outnumber priority mistakes.

  • Watering can upgrade during peak hand-watering
  • Leaving a finished tool at Clint for a week
  • Spending iridium on trash can before pickaxe
  • Upgrading during a Special Order that needs that tool
  • No sprinklers before gold can dreams

Frequently asked questions

Do I need iridium tools for Perfection?

Iridium tools are not a named Perfection checkbox, but they accelerate mining, chopping, and farming tasks that feed Perfection. Upgrade when bars allow; do not block friendship or museum for vanity timing.

Can I upgrade tools in Winter only?

Winter is ideal but not required. Any low-chore stretch works. Align upgrades with your save’s calendar and luck so you still have productive alternate activities.

Can Robin upgrade tools?

No—tool metal upgrades are Clint’s blacksmith job. Robin handles buildings and house upgrades. Do not wait in the carpenter shop for a pickaxe.

What tool should I upgrade first?

Usually the pickaxe for Mines progress, then axe for hardwood and clearing, then hoe/can based on farm automation. If a giant log blocks your farm goals, axe can jump the queue. Never upgrade the can before sprinklers unless Winter covers you.

When should I upgrade the watering can?

When sprinklers already cover critical crops, or during Winter. Upgrading mid-planting season without coverage risks dead crops. Retaining soil can soften emergencies.
