14 min readYour first week in Stardew Valley: a day-by-day starter plan
A detailed Days 1–7 plan for new farmers: land clearing, Parsnips, chests, TV habits, early friendship, and when to ignore the Mines — with deep links into crops, bundles, and villagers.
The goal of week one is options, not a pretty farm
If the farm looks ugly but the shipping bin is loud and you are not passing out, you are winning week one.
New players lose week one by terraforming the whole Standard Farm, sprinting into the Mines naked, or selling every forage item they will need for bundles. Your real targets by Spring 7 are smaller: a working crop rectangle, at least one chest, copper-tier awareness (even if you have not upgraded yet), and a mental map of Pelican Town.
Use JunimoSphere’s crop catalog filtered to Spring before you plant anything beyond the free Parsnip seeds. Keep the date bar matched to your save so birthdays and the Egg Festival (Spring 13) stay visible while you learn the clock.
This guide assumes a normal difficulty farm with no mods. Multiplayer hosts should treat “week one” as shared triage: one person clears, one gifts, one fishes — not four people chopping random trees.
Day 1 — Parsnips, wood, and one chest
Plant every free Parsnip seed on tilled watered soil before you wander. Clearing should stop at “I can walk a rectangle,” not “I erased the forest.” Fifteen wood for a chest is a hard early craft; put it by the farm exit so forage and quest items stop living in your inventory forever.
Talk to whoever is standing still in town. Friendship is free XP for the social layer, and early hearts unlock cooking recipes you will need when Field Snacks stop covering mine trips.
Watch the TV: weather forecast and Fortune Teller are beginner training wheels. Queen of Sauce on Sundays is how you learn cooking without a wiki tab open.
- Plant all starter Parsnips same day
- Craft a chest before the Mines
- Talk to 3+ villagers before bed
- Check TV weather every morning
Days 2–4 — forage loops, salmonberries, and energy discipline
Spring forage (Leek, Dandelion, Wild Horseradish, Daffodil) feeds both energy and Community Center slots. Do not sell your only Wild Horseradish. Open the bundles tool and pin Spring Foraging so you know which items are sacred.
Salmonberry bushes in mid-Spring are a beginner energy cheat code. Eat them; do not treat them like shipping bin filler until you have spare stacks.
If energy hits zero mid-afternoon, go home. Passing out costs gold and dignity. Read the energy guide next if you keep collapsing at 1:50am with a full backpack.
Days 5–7 — first fish, first mine glance, first gift
Rainy days are for fishing and Mines scouting, not watering panic (your can still matters, but rain covers outdoor crops). Willy’s shop and the beach pier teach the fishing minigame; use the catch matrix with season=Spring so you are not guessing which fish exist yet.
A single Mines trip to floor 5–10 teaches combat without demanding a full clear. Bring food. Leave when health or energy says so. The “mines for new farmers” guide covers kit and timing.
Gift one loved or liked item if you have it — not five random weeds. Reverse lookup on the gifts tool turns a weird forage into a name.
What not to do in week one (expensive habits)
Do not buy fancy decorative furniture. Do not plant every seed Pierre sells without a watering plan. Do not ignore the community bundles UI until Summer. Do not marry anyone in week one. Do not delete trees you will wish you had for oak resin later — clear corridors, keep timber banks.
Joja vs Community Center is a real fork, but week one only needs you to enter the Community Center and meet the wizard’s junimo moment. Room priority comes in the beginner Community Center guide.
- No full-farm clear
- No zero-food mine marathons
- No shipping bundle-unique forage
- No ignoring TV weather
Frequently asked questions
How big should my first farm plot be?
Small enough to water by hand daily — often 3×4 to 5×5. Expand after a watering can upgrade. Sketch in /farm-planner if you want.
Do I need sprinklers in week one?
No. Hand-water a small grid. Sprinklers are a Mid-Spring+ craft goal once you have ores.
When should I enter the Mines?
After you have a chest, some food, and preferably a rainy or free afternoon. Soft target: late week one, floors 1–10 only. Details: /guides/mines-for-new-farmers.
What should I plant on day one?
All free Parsnip seeds on watered tilled soil. See /crops?crop=parsnip and Spring filters on /crops.
Should I sell forage?
Keep one of each Spring forage for bundles first. Check /bundles before shipping.
