Sphere Signals
12 min readFarm Maps: all eight layouts compared
Standard through Meadowlands — tillable space, skill lean, and when to open each map in the Farm Planner before you create a save.
Pick the friction you enjoy. Maps encode playstyle, not a difficulty ranking.
Your farm map is the one character-creation choice you cannot undo without a new save. Each of the eight layouts biases crop space, water, combat, hardwood, ore, and animal starts. None are wrong — they encode playstyle.
JunimoSphere keeps two tools beside this Signal: the Farm Planner places buildings on a schematic mask of the real TMX, and Layouts estimates shed and keg density once you know how you want to build.
First saves usually want Standard, Four Corners, or Meadowlands. Beach and Wilderness are spice for second farms.
At a glance (diggable tiles from our TMX extract)
Counts are diggable Back-layer tiles from the unpacked farm maps. Wiki tillable numbers are close but not identical — use these as planning ballparks, then open the matching farm in the Farm Planner.
- Standard Farm: ~3,680 diggable tiles, ~3,755 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Farming. Largest open fields for crops and animals.
- Riverland Farm: ~1,736 diggable tiles, ~2,232 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Fishing. Starts with a Fish Smoker; town/forest river fish mix; bubble spots enabled.
- Forest Farm: ~1,632 diggable tiles, ~3,070 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Foraging. Hardwood stumps, berry bushes, forest forage and mixed-seed weeds.
- Hill-top Farm: ~2,120 diggable tiles, ~2,740 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Mining. On-farm quarry nodes scale with Mining; awkward cliffs and a stream.
- Wilderness Farm: ~2,565 diggable tiles, ~2,699 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Combat. Night monsters (Iridium Golems at high Combat); lake fish sometimes.
- Four Corners Farm: ~3,575 diggable tiles, ~3,527 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Multiplayer. Four themed quadrants — ideal multiplayer ownership.
- Beach Farm: ~2,766 diggable tiles, ~4,738 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Foraging / Fishing. Supply crates, beach forage, sprinklers fail on sand except a small dirt patch.
- Meadowlands Farm: ~2,082 diggable tiles, ~4,267 placeable after clearing occupied tiles. Skill lean: Farming. Blue grass animals love; starter Coop + two chickens; hay instead of parsnip seeds.
Standard and Four Corners
Standard is the teaching farm: contiguous plantable space, familiar from trailers and guides. Ideal for first saves and sprinkler mega-fields.
Four Corners splits land into themed quadrants with a shared middle — excellent for multiplayer ownership, still fine solo if you like compartmentalized layouts. Bottom-right mirrors Hill-top’s quarry; top-left mirrors Forest forage energy.
Forest, Riverland, and Hill-top
Forest shrinks some crop rectangles but pays you in hardwood stumps and forage energy — great for builders. Riverland fragments fields with water for fishing-centric farms and prettier ponds. Hill-top adds a unique ore-spawn hill so mining mornings never leave home.
Choose Forest if hardwood delights you; Riverland if crab pots and fishing skill are your identity; Hill-top if on-farm nodes matter more than open rectangles.
- Forest: hardwood renewables + forage.
- Riverland: Fish Smoker start, fishing tiles everywhere.
- Hill-top: ore hill, terrain planning required.
Wilderness, Beach, and Meadowlands
Wilderness spawns monsters at night (scaling with Combat). Exclusive Iridium Golems appear at high Combat — exciting if you want farm combat, miserable if you do not. Farm monsters give reduced Combat XP versus the Mines.
Beach is for seasoned players: lots of open build space and forage, but sprinklers refuse most sandy soil. Plan barns, ponds, and sheds first; treat the small dirt patch as your sprinkler core.
Meadowlands (1.6) leans hard into animals: chewy blue grass, a starter Coop with two randomly named chickens, and hay instead of Lewis’s parsnip seeds. Turtola-style day-one saves start here — open Meadowlands in the Farm Planner to sketch barns before spring ends.
Hill-top and Four Corners quarry rates
Both Hill-top and the Four Corners bottom-right quadrant run the mountain-farm node spawner. Rough odds by Mining level (wiki-derived planning table):
- Mining 0–3: mostly stone + copper; ~15% artifact spots; geodes possible.
- Mining 4: iron nodes unlock; copper and stone still common.
- Mining 5–6: frozen geodes enter the mix.
- Mining 7: gold nodes appear.
- Mining 8–9: magma geodes possible.
- Mining 10+: small iridium node chance (~1%).
How to choose
You cannot change farm maps mid-save. Second farms are free to experiment.
If you want max crop tiles and a gentle tutorial: Standard. Hosting friends: Four Corners. Animals-first in 1.6: Meadowlands. Fishing identity: Riverland. Hardwood and forage: Forest. On-farm ore: Hill-top. Combat spice: Wilderness. Coastal vibes and crates: Beach — knowing sprinklers will fight you.
When you have picked a map, open it in the Farm Planner, drop a Coop or Barn footprint on placeable tiles, then use Layouts for interior keg math.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my farm map later?
No. Farm map is locked at character creation. Start a new save (or use mods outside JunimoSphere’s scope) to switch layouts.
Where did the old Valley Map tool go?
The location browser was retired. Farm Maps live here as a Sphere Signal; building placement lives in the Farm Planner. Fish locations still deep-link into the Catch matrix.
Is Meadowlands the same as Ranching in the files?
Yes. The game ships Meadowlands as AdditionalFarms Id MeadowlandsFarm with MapName Farm_Ranching. Our Farm Planner loads that TMX.
